LUDINGTON — Two men are convicted of “eavesdropping — installing device” after taking a photo and sharing it among friends of a partially-unclothed 17-year-old woman who was passed out at a party in 2017. Alex Christian Jobbins-Ortiz, 25, of 602 S. Madison St., Ludington and Isaiah Samuel Pena, 21, of 5784 W. Johnson Rd., Pere Marquette Township, were arrested last January by the Ludington Police Department on a felony charge of “surveilling an unclothed person.” Both pleaded to the lesser felony charge, which is punishable by up to two years in prison, in 51st Circuit Court, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. Pena was sentenced earlier this month to serve 90 days up front of a one-year discretionary jail term with credit for 90 days already served, according to court records. He was also ordered to serve two years probation. Jobbins-Ortiz faces serving six months up front of a one-year jail term, along with probation, said Spaniola. LUDINGTON – A 24-year-old Wellston woman who threatened to burn down Walmart last November received a probationary sentence in 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, July 7. Morgan Faith Johnson pleaded guilty, Feb. 11, to charges of assaulting/resisting/obstructing police and retail fraud. Judge Susan K. Sniegowksi sentenced Johnson to serve 45 days in jail up front — without a report date — of a one-year discretionary jail term. Johnson received credit for 22 days served in jail. “If there is any violation of probation, you will have have to report for 23 days,” Judge Sniegowski said. Johnson was also ordered to 18 months probation. She appeared in court via Zoom teleconferencing due to COVID-19 precautions. Father, daughter arrested on home invasion, assault charges. #MasonCountyCrime SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP — A father and his adult daughter have been arrested after allegedly breaking into and assaulting a Sheridan Township man. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, deputies from Mason County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from Michigan State Police Hart Post were dispatched to a home in the 6900 block of East Millerton Road at 4:55 p.m. on Friday, July 10. Upon arriving on the scene deputies and troopers located a 76 year-old man who had sustained a laceration to his head, Cole said. “ He reported to deputies he had been assaulted by two persons who had entered his home. He reported one of those persons struck him in the head with a small Coleman propane gas canister.” Cole said the victim further reported that the suspects had sprayed him with pepper spray. The incident allegedly centered around the victim’s grandson, who had been accused of swerving an ATV towards a family member of the suspects. LUDINGTON — A 20-year-old Hart man was sentenced to jail in 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, July 21, for a conviction of attempted first-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC). Alexander Cole Mayse, of 8977 N. 120th Ave., pleaded guilty, May 12. Mayse was sentenced by Judge Susan K. Sniegowski to serve 141 days up front of a one-year discretionary jail term with credit for 141 days served. Mayse must also register as a sex offender and serve five years probation. The victim is a 12-year-old girl, and the incident occurred last summer in the City of Ludington, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. One count of first-degree CSC, which is punishable by up to life in prison, was dismissed in exchange for his plea. The maximum penalty for attempted first-degree CSC is five years in prison. LUDINGTON — A 59-year-old Ludington man who drove the wrong way on US 31 last December was sentenced in 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, Aug. 11, to serve five months up front of a one-year discretionary term. Timothy Hansen, of 6717 S. Pere Marquette Hwy., is convicted of third-offense operating while intoxicated. Hansen was arrested following several 911 calls reporting a vehicle driving northbound on southbound US 31, Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said previously. “A deputy spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle reportedly refused to stop,” Sheriff Cole said. “The deputy chased the suspect northbound into Amber Township — about two miles — before the vehicle lost control and ran into the median.” A charge of fleeing and eluding was dismissed. Hansen’s blood alcohol content was .21, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. “We’re extremely fortunate there were not multiple fatalities,” said Spaniola. LUDINGTON — A 43-year-old Ludington man who faces 15-40 years in prison for cocaine delivery convictions was a “no show” for his sentencing hearing in 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, Aug. 11. As a result, Judge Susan K. Sniegowski will issue a bench warrant for the arrest of Anthony Earl Green, of 106 Second St., for failure to appear. Green pleaded guilty, June 9, to one count of delivery/manufacture of 50-450 grams of cocaine, two counts of delivery/manufacture of cocaine less than 50 grams and third-offense habitual offender. He was arrested Jan. 16 by the State, Sheriffs and Chiefs Enforcement of Narcotic Team (SSCENT). Green initially faced five felony counts of cocaine delivery, one high-court misdemeanor of maintaining a drug house and fourth-offense habitual offender. His habitual offender status elevated his maximum possible sentence to life in prison, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. Rowe St., has been arraigned in 79th District Court on multiple charges in connection to an incident that allegedly took place Thursday night in the 500 block of East Danaher Street. According to court documents, Kaiser is accused of assaulting a man with a pistol while trying to rob and steal that man. He is also accused of assault with a dangerous weapon against a woman and another man with intent to commit murder or to inflect great bodily harm less than murder. Ludington man faces weapons charges. LUDINGTON — A 27-year-old Ludington man has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Lancelot Christopher Peebles of 506 E. Danaher St., Apt. 3, was arraigned in 79th District Court on Aug. 14 on the felony charges. According to court records, Peebles was allegedly a victim in a gun assault that took place in that same block on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 13. Jeffery Allen Kaiser, 58, of 209 S. Rowe St., faces nine counts in relation to that case. (See related story here). According to Ludington Police Chief Timothy Kozal, the charges against Peebles are not related to the Kaiser case but are the result of an investigation that was conducted following the incident. SCOTTVILLE — The Scottville Police Department arrested two men Monday, Aug. 17, on felony drug charges following a traffic stop on East Broadway Avenue. Both men were arraigned today, Tuesday, Aug. 18, in 79th District Court. Stephen John Silvers, 32, of 3767 N. Shadybrooke Ln., Victory Township, the driver of the vehicle, was charged with controlled substance – possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy. Robert Andrew Thompson, 20, of 1857 E. Millerton Road, Sherman Township, the passenger, was charged with controlled substance – possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy and controlled substance – possession (cocaine, heroin or another narcotic). Bail was set at $10,000 cash/surety. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 26, 2020. Both men were lodged at the Mason County Jail. Please consider helping to fund local news.
